Monogrammed Vinyl Placemats

It needs to be something that would be super easy to wipe off, clean, and be able to handle a lot of abuse. Vinyl was the perfect answer. It's inexpensive, heavy duty, and met my easy-to-clean criteria. I paired it with another great textile--oilcloth--and it turned out exactly how I imagined!

ITEMS YOU NEED:

• clear plastic vinyl (You can buy this by the yard at any fabric store. There are several different weights, varying in price. I purchased a medium weight vinyl, and spent around $4, which was enough for 8 placemats.)
• felt
• paper template
• pins
• scissors
• oilcloth
• spray adhesive

DIRECTIONS:

1. Cut your vinyl to the size you want your placemat to be.

I made mine 18 inches wide, and 11 inches tall.

2. Print out a template for the monograms. I wanted a thick font, so it would be easier to cut out, so I used smiley monster, sized to 400.

3. Cut out your template, pin to the felt, and then cut out your felt letters. You could also trace your letter, instead of pinning it, but I've found it's a lot faster to pin it instead. The felt is thick enough that it will stay in place while you're cutting.

4. Spray the adhesive onto the oilcloth, following the can directions. (The spray I used had me leave it on for 1 minute, before laying on the felt.) Lay your felt monogram on top of the oilcloth, and press to seal.

5. Spray the adhesive on top of the letter, and the oilcloth, then press face down onto placemat. Turn the placemat back over to the front side, and press firmly to seal. Now your monogram is protected on both sides--the plastic vinyl on the front, and the oilcloth on the back.

That's it! Super simple, darling, and practical!

Grocery Bag Holder

Are you a grocery bag collector? Use them for mini garbage can liners? To carry picnic lunches in? To throw diapers in before throwing those stinky bombs in the garbage?

Where do you put all of your bags? Need a tutorial for one? Well, here you go.


Now, I know no one really sees these if they are tucked away in a closet.......but maybe it'll make you smile every time you see it, if you pour your little heart out while making it. Go on and make it with some darling fabric to brighten up that closet. Just an idea.

You'll Need:

• If you want your holder all one color - 1 piece of fabric, 20 x 25 inches. If you want strips like pictured here, you'll need 9 pieces of fabric, 20 x 3 1/2 inches.

• 2 pieces of narrow elastic (1/4 wide or smaller). 11 inches and 6 1/2 inches.

• 1 piece of ribbon - 14 inches long.

• Thread

If you're using strips, sew all of them together along their long sides (1/4 inch seams). Iron all of the seams open.

Then, make a casing for your elastic at each end. Turn over the fabric about an 1/4 of an inch and then fold it over again about 1/3 of an inch. Sew really close to the fold so that your 1/4 inch elastic can still fit. Do this to both ends

Now, thread your elastic through each end and sew each end of the elastic securely to the opening of each end of the casing. Keep in mind, the larger piece of elastic is for the top of your holder (so you can shove many bags in) and the smaller piece of elastic is for the bottom (so that you only pull one bag out at a time).

Next, turn the holder right side out and pin the ribbon (I turned the end under once) into place, about 3/4 of an inch from the top. Sew the ribbon into place several times, making it secure.

Lastly, sew the 2 long sides together, with right sides together.

Hang................and stuff.

Mothers Day Tea Towel Cake

Here's how to make it & what you'll need:

• Cake Base Board
• Bendable Cardboard
• Three Coordinating Tea Towels
• Baking Utensils & Cookie Cutter
• Ribbon, Letters or other Embellishments
• Hot Glue Gun & Glue
• Four Pins

Step One:

I used a cereal box for my cardboard. If using the same, flatten out and cut two strips.

My first strip was about 4 inches wide by 16 inches long

My second strip was 6 inches wide by 13 inches long.


Step Two:

I found these "designer" coordinating tea towel sets at Ross for $5.00!




Step Three:

Bend the long strip into a circle. Secured with hot glue and then secure to the cake base with hot glue.

Step Four:

Repeat step three with the taller strip and secure it in the middle.




Step Five:

Covering the cardboard is simple. Fold your tea towel (I kept mine folded the way it came) and wrap it around the cardboard and secure with pins in the back. Fold the bottom towel over the cardboard.

Step Six:

Stuff your third tea towel into the top and fluff up all pretty!








Step Seven:

Decorate your cake! I did a baking theme, wooden spoons, whisks and a heart cookie cutter. Then I added ribbon and sparkly letters I had left over from a real cake my friend made for my baby shower.

You're Done! Easy, Cute & Unique! I love it!
